Hi, I’m Shivi Bhatnagar. I’m a cinematographer, documentary filmmaker, editor, and analogue animator based in New Delhi, and I’ve been working in the industry for close to a decade now.
I have a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, and I found my way into cinematography as a way to explore the intersection of visual art and technology in storytelling. Over the years, my work has taken me across different parts of India as well as international contexts. I’m also a member of the Indian Women Cinematographers’ Collective(IWCC).
I really value collaborative processes, and I often work with artists from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds to build layered and reflective visual narratives. I’ve also had to adapt a lot across different kinds of production environments and formats, which has become an important part of my practice.
Alongside my film work, I co-run Choorma Studio, which is a design studio based in Delhi. We work across illustration, graphic design, comics, and animation. Through this, I’m also involved in independent publishing with Inklab, where we collaborate with emerging artists to curate and publish comics.
I also conduct workshops on mobile filmmaking and visual storytelling, often in collaboration with NGOs. These are focused on making media tools and storytelling more accessible, especially for young people and community-based participants.
